Who followed/unfollowed you on Twitter report with Power BI

posted on November 15, 2016

If you are a Twitter user you are probably used having people following and unfollowing you all the time.

Twitter will let you know who is following you, but not who is unfollowing you. I am aware that there are other services that do that for you, but I thought it would be a fun challenge to do it using Power BI.

Challenge with Twitter data

Here is the challenge:

If you use Twitter public data, I have shown you how to import that in Power BI, you will realize that the API will give you absolute values. For example, Twitter will not give you how many new followers you get per day, like you get with other services like google analytics, instead it gives you always the totals. An example,

If you had 89 followers yesterday and 2 people unfollow you, Twitter will give you a new list returning 87 followers and if you didn’t save the old file, you will not have a way to know who unfollowed you.

How will we measure growth and performance if we don’t get the data day by day in increments or access to old data?

Well, I figured a way to do just that and you can see how that method works in the YouTube video below.

In this dashboard you will be able to understand:

  • Who followed me on Twitter?
  • Who unfollowed me on Twitter?

If you would like to see a live version of the dashboard, you can watch it in our YouTube Channel, but if you prefer text, continue reading:
